The continuing theme is “Technology I wish I’d paid more attention to before I came to VMware.” Of all those technologies at VMware, vRealize Log Insight might be the most overlooked by everyone. At the same time, it’s a great tool for the sneakers-on-the-ground IT personnel working hard to keep the lights on. At it’s core, Log Insight is a log aggregation tool that can store and report on the various status and error logs generated by virtual and physical infrastructure in the data center. Here’s a great introductory video. It’s really amazing how simple an interface it has, how quickly you can filter down to purely relevant log entries, and show that error happening on the time domain.

Things can get really powerful when you use Log Insight to interact with vRealize Operations. You can use Log Insight to filter down to a specific type of log event that might be especially noteworthy for the VM or application you’re managing. Then when that specific error happens (once, more than x times in y min, etc), Log Insight can be configured to send a warning or error to vROps:

Of course, all of this depends on parsing the logs correctly in the first place, making sure the Log Insight knows about the structure of the logs. Here, you can use content packs for various products created by VMware and you can create your own log parsing content pack.

Oh, are you at VMworld 2016 in Las Vegas? Then check out the following sessions on vRealize Log Insight:
